RNC protests turn ugly

Denver Post)
ST. PAUL, MINN. — Protesters attacked delegates, smashed windows, punctured car tires and threw bottles Monday, a violent counterpoint to an otherwise peaceful anti-war march at the Republican National Convention. Police wielding pepper spray arrested at least 56 people.

The trouble happened not far from the Xcel Energy Center convention site, and many of those involved in the more violent protest were clad in black and identified themselves to reporters as anarchists. They wrought havoc by damaging property and setting at least one fire. Most of the trouble was in pockets of a neighborhood near downtown, several blocks from where the convention was taking place.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The lunatic left is active again.

More likely... the lunatic extremists. These protestors are the mirror image of the ultra-right protestors who disrupt our soldiers' funerals. Both major parties have their 'lunatic fringe'... and none of them speaks for me.

Actually, most of these people described themselves as anarchists. Not sure how you can blame this on the lunatic left.

I was SO glad we didn't see Calvin's picture in there :)

Katrix speaks the truth. Just because something bad happened at the RNC, and the 'libruls' don't like the Republicans, doesn't automatically mean the libruls were responsible. It's called an association fallacy.

Example:

I eat vegetables.
Serial killers eat vegetables.
I must be a serial killer because I eat vegetables.

There were 55 comments on this article in the Denver Post, most condemning the mob.

These are the same accusations that were made about the convention in NY, the WTO protests in Seattle and almost any other venue where people tried to exercise their right to assemble - the big scary terms 'riot' and 'anarchist' are quickly applied. The reports in NY and Seattle were long ago found to be cases, not of protester misconduct, but of police and security over-reaction and in some cases brutality. Some police officers have even come forward and testified in past investigations to assert that superiors insisted that they use the most aggressive actions against protesters even if it violated legal, policing policies and standards.

While there have and always will be a few who will take advantage of any public gathering to cause trouble - break windows, throw rocks, and other stupid stuff - the people commiting those acts of vandalism and violence are petty criminals and vandals and don't even know what the protest is about!

We saw the ABC reporters being manhandled by cigar smoking cops in Denver when he tried to ask questions and film on a public street. It has already come out in eye witness pictures that it is the police and security forces that are violently attacking peaceful protesters.

Stay tuned - I would suggest that there are lots of camera phones that will be capturing the real scenes.

We've known for days this was going to happen, and have hotly debated this issue. See the thread at:

It is time to make St. Paul a safe place for the convention delegates to exercise their right to free speech. Lock up Anarchist protesters before they commit more violent acts.
